We provide practical environmental solutions for interesting and complex projects. The successful candidate will work under a senior aquatic / fisheries biologist and will develop a thorough understanding of key legislation in relation to a variety of projects typically related to construction, infrastructure, and transportation. You must be willing to be readily available to conduct field work with Morrison Hershfield's senior biologists, both locally and throughout Ontario, often on short notice (all travel expenses will be paid and field training provided). You must also be willing to occasionally work long hours, sometimes in inclement weather. You must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, be adaptable to quickly changing priorities, and have a willingness to take on challenges.  Our environmental team is a group of dedicated, enthusiastic, experienced, and professional individuals who will help to assist you in reaching your goals and gaining valuable experience.

  • Assist with desktop background research and data collection, as well as preparation of general permit applications (e.g. MNRF and Conservation Authorities)
  • Work closely with senior biologists to conduct biophysical field surveys on lakes, rivers and streams collecting field data on fish communities, aquatic habitat, water quality, aquatic invertebrates, and aquatic and riparian vegetation
  • Maintain and organize accurate and detailed field log-books as well as photo documentation records
  • Input, maintain and summarize data and information in databases and reports (i.e. Fish and Fish Habitat Assessment, Fisheries Impact Assessment Reports)
  • Assist with construction inspection and oversight where work is occurring on watercourses to monitor sediment and erosion control effectiveness as well as proper implementation of mitigation measures
  • Work in a multi-disciplinary team



  • Minimum of 2 years post-secondary education with a major in fisheries science, ecology, biology or environmental studies
  • Preference given to those with backpack electrofishing experience and certification
  • Must have strong fish identification skills and appropriate training to identify common fish species within Ontario
  • Previous experience conducting biophysical baseline and/or monitoring projects that comply with Environmental Assessment requirements would be an asset (MTO Class EA process)
  • Must have strong technical report writing skills and the ability to compile field data into summary reports (i.e. Fish and Fish Habitat Assessment, Fisheries Impact Assessment Reports)
  • Must be comfortable and feel safe working in and around water and working in all weather conditions
  • Proficient with Windows Office (Word, Excel)
  • Valid Ontario driver's license
  • Any experience with environmental inspection during construction is an asset
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification is an asset
