Morrison Hershfield's Transportation Structures Division provides assessments, planning, design and construction administration services for bridge and other transportation related infrastructure. Working together our National Transportation Structure Group with over 80 specialists in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Alberta, Markham and Ottawa, there are excellent opportunities for collaboration across jurisdictions; working on interesting projects of all types & sizes;as well as career advancement.


We are seeking a CAD Technologist to complement our skilled team in the Markham office. The CAD Technologist is responsible for developing and producing CAD drawings from engineering designs and sketches. They are also responsible for maintaining consistency across projects, and developing libraries of information for use in future projects.

  • Produce drawings, working according to client drafting standards and manuals, established practices and guidelines, with a high degree of technical accuracy
  • Adapt to new techniques and methods of drafting when and where necessary for project delivery
  • Work from sketches or notes to prepare final drawings, plans, maps and other relatively complex materials requiring proficiency in a variety of standardized drawing techniques, including AutoCAD/MircoStation environment
  • Prepare drawing packages for electronic file submission to clients
  • Interact and coordination with the Regional Office staff remotely using electronic channels
  • Coordination of structural, highway/road, electrical drawings for transportation structures
  • Maintain CAD document archive and retrieval for projects
  • QA/QC of own work to ensure that drawings are checked, approved and filed in accordance with company quality system
  • Perform/assist quantity takeoffs based on drawing information


  • A graduate of a Civil Engineering diploma program with a civil/structure option or equivalent, with strong interest in structures, particularly bridges
  • Minimum of four years’ experience with drafting structural drawings within the consulting industry with transportation structure related projects
  • Technical or vocational training in drafting technology
  • Eligible for professional registration an asset

  • Knowledge and experience of structural engineering design
  • Strong knowledge and proven experience in AutoCAD and MicroStation
  • Microsoft Office proficiency, especially with Excel and Outlook
  • Perform mathematics operations including geometry, trigonometry preferred
  • Comprehend and utilize drafting standards, including clients’ and in-house drafting standards
  • Ability to visualize and project 3D objects into 2D views (and vice-versa)
  • Self-motivated and able to work under pressure
  • Ability to work overtime as required to meet client deadlines
  • Ability to be detailed oriented, function in a multi-task projects and be able to follow complex instructions
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team based environment
  • Demonstrated willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities
  • Excellent organization skills
