Morrison Hershfield's Building Science group provides specialty engineering planning, design, construction administration, and R&D services for a vast array of building types and uses. We are currently seeking a Building Science Engineer or Architect to complement our Building Science team in the Ottawa Office. You will play a role in the delivery of new construction and rehabilitation building envelope projects, building condition assessment/evaluations, Environmental Separation consulting, testing, Building Envelope/Enclosure Commissioning, Sustainability and Energy analysis, and related field services.


The work our office undertakes stretches from northern Manitoba to St. John's, NL, and down as far as Texas.  Due to expanding business opportunities across North America, this position offers significant potential for growth in the areas of technical and professional development within the large Morrison Hershfield Building Science team.

The position will require a broad range of skills and capabilities across a wide spectrum of clients, building types, and climate zones. Responsibilities will include:

  • Working within the Morrison Hershfield specialist Building Science team in the preparation of designs, design drawings, contract documents, and engineering specifications for our work
  • Carrying out diagnosis of building problems required to design building envelope repairs
  • Conducting building condition assessments and related project work
  • Conducting in-situ air and water leakage testing of windows, curtain wall, window wall, glazed architectural structures, and cladding assemblies
  • Carrying out field review during new and/or rehabilitation construction work and report on progress and the builder's adherence to contract documentation
  • Supporting project management in the delivery of projects
  • Working on business development and client management activities
  • Certification of professional work, as appropriate
  • Mentoring and training of staff on all aspects of the job
  • Performing other duties associated with working in a professional consulting engineering office of over 20 highly skilled building science specialists, and over 100 multi-disciplined specialists in all aspects of engineering


  • A graduate of Civil or Mechanical Engineering or Architecture program with a Building Science option or equivalent
  • Engineering or architecture professional status in any province of Canada is a benefit. Ability to become registered professional in Ontario within two to three years a must
  • Minimum 2 years of work experience
  • Knowledge of building science and/or architectural conservation, such as; thermodynamics, heat transfer, psychometrics, heritage architecture and/or heritage masonry, and building structures
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and other engineering and office related application software
  • An interest in construction, the performance of buildings, field review/investigation, and materials science
  • Experience writing construction specifications
  • Experience writing and reviewing construction contracts
  • Experience on construction sites
  • Ability to work with a team of professionals, liaise with clients, contractors and municipal authorities
  • Interest in business development/sales and project management an asset
  • A strong drive for personal and professional growth and continuous learning
  • Spoken and written English a must.  Spoken and written French a definite asset
  • Valid Ontario's driver's licence and access to a vehicle
